The crisp water rides its way up the smooth sand
and then retreats, leaving a unique foam
I sink my toes into it and think
I’m here!
At this very point in all of infinite time, I am here.
A version of me I’ll never know again but in my memory.
The limitless scope of this is too sizable for me to grasp
The dark seaweed ocean is haunting
The pattern of the current slides horizontally
I wonder what kind of a witch, a universe drifter, a goddess made it so.
25 years ago this place was littered with sea otters
They’ve been gone for decades
and I wonder why.
I miss them, and I miss the version of me that saw them,
and I miss the version of me here today,
because I know it’s for this moment and this moment only.
I will hereafter change
and, one day, disappear
and someone new will sit on this glorious wooden bench
drinking in the deep expansive blue.
